Simple number operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are crucial as they form the foundation of mathematics.
As young children develop understanding of counting they also learn about addition and subtraction.
This is the idea of adding which means producing more, and subtracting therefore producing less. Children learn that when you add something to an existing set, the result is that you have more than you had at first. When you subtract something to an existing set, the result is that you ‘take away’ from the set and end up with less. Once children understand addition (plus) and subtraction (minus), they move on to learning multiplication and division.
How to Wonder & Bloom
Practise simple sums by creating your sum in the rectangular space at the top of your Bloom Board.
Use the pom poms to count (either adding or subtracting) and then use your number tiles to create your answer.
You can create many different sums as well as using the greater than, less than and equals to tiles.
Example: Place the number 8 tile and the number 3 tile into the space provided at the top. Now place pom poms representing each number in the two blocks below each number.. See which one has more pom poms and then place the correct sign in between them ( < or > or =). it should read 8 > 3
