Description
“Pyramid reading” for fluency is a reading activity where a text is structured in a pyramid shape, with each line adding one more word to the previous line, gradually building up to a full sentence at the bottom. This allows readers to practice specific words and phrases repeatedly to improve their reading fluency by focusing on a few new words at a time.
The benefits of pyramid reading include:
1. Building confidence: The gradual progression of the pyramid helps children feel successful as they build towards reading a complete sentence.
2. Improving decoding skills: By focusing on a few new words at a time, students can practice decoding skills more effectively.
3. Enhances fluency: Repeated exposure to the same words within different sentence structures helps children read more fluently.
How to Wonder & Bloom
Build the pyramid one wooden tile at a time. Start with the beginning word – capital letter “I” and slot it in. Now read it out loud.
The next row has space for two words – “I” and “can”, slot them in and now read your sentence. Continue doing so until the whole pyramid is complete and you have a full sentence that makes sense “I can see the cat.”
Use the white Perspex tiles to create your own sentence pyramid (5 word sentence).
