Description
A blend is when two or more consonants are pronounced together, but each sound is still heard. For example, in the word “cat,” the “at” is a blend because you can hear both the “a” and the “t” sounds.
Learning blends is crucial as they help children improve their reading and spelling skills. Blends are the foundation for recognizing and pronouncing more complex words, as they teach children how to combine multiple consonant sounds smoothly.
Mastering blends also enhances fluency, allowing children to decode new words quickly and accurately. Knowing blends supports writing by giving children the tools to spell words with multiple consonants.
How to Wonder & Bloom
Practise saying all the different blends provided (engraved) on your Bloom Board.
Spread out your wooden alphabet tiles and practise placing them in each slot making sure that the word you have built, makes sense.
Repeat this step making different words and using different letters each time.
TIP: write down the words you have made so that you don’t end up repeating any
You could also ask an adult to write down different words (of each blend) for you on a piece of paper and see if you can build all the words they provided (have fun ticking them off as you go).
